ORGAN APPEAL

St Mary's Wives Group

St Mary's Wives Group meets in Church House at 8.00pm on the first and third Thursday in the month, except August. There are about 30 members. It is not restricted to Church Members or specifically to married women. New members and visitors are always welcome. Details of our Meetings can also be found in “Contact”, on the Church “Bulletin” or on our notice board in Church House.

The programme is very varied and ideas for new topics are always welcome. It includes demonstrations, talks of both a serious and light-hearted nature, theatre trips and a summer evening event followed by refreshments. An annual cheese and wine party (to which husbands are invited!) is held each May; there is a Christmas Dinner and an all day outing in the summer.

Each January the members provide tea and entertainment for about 120 senior citizens, funded by coffee mornings held throughout the year. The group also makes donations to several local charities. New members are always welcome and do not have to be part of the St Mary's congregation.

If you would like further information or the name of someone in your are to bring you along, please contact Susan Franks.

The Wives take to the stage

For the last forty years St Mary’s Wives Group have been giving Parties for local Senior Citizens, this January was no exception.

Two Parties, on consecutive Saturdays,  were held in Church House. The first was for the local Helping Hands Group and the second for 73 senior  members of the congregation and community. On both occasions the Wives group provided tea and entertainment which featured “Songs from the Shows”.

Charity Quiz 2006 Thank you to everyone who supported this annual event. The evening raised £350 which will be divided equally between the local branches of the Macmillan Nurses and The Alzheimer's Association.

Report for 2005

Membership of the Wives Group remains constant at 30, the group is not restricted to Church members or specifically to married women.  New members and visitors are always welcome, details of our meetings can be found in “Contact”, on the “Church Bulletin” or on our Notice Board in Church House.

2005 was yet another busy year, our Programme included talks on a wide range of subjects including ‘Music Magic Carpet – Journey in Sand’, ‘Fiction with a Chocolate Theme’, ‘Embroidery’, ‘Artist on Art’, ‘Please Sir’ and ‘I like Coffee, I like Tea’.  We had a Keep fit evening with Jill and an evening viewing Janet’s trip to India.

Social evenings included our Summer Party in June, a walking quiz of Hitchin followed by Fish and Chips and our AGM and Dinner both in July.  We finished off the year with our Christmas Dinner at The Raven at Hexton.

In January each year we hold two parties with tea, entertainment and a present, one for the Helping Hands Group and the other for around 70 local Senior Citizens.  The parties are funded by our three Church House Coffee Mornings held throughout the year.  This year the entertainment was provided by our members and, by popular request, the return of The Bygrave Handbell Ringers.

In November we held our Annual Quiz which raised £365.00 for our 2005/2006 charity – The Garden House Hospice.

During August meetings are not held in Church House, we have two coffee Evenings held in Members houses, the proceeds of which are donated to the host's chosen charity.  During the period August 2004-May 2005 the Wives Group donated a total of £670.60 to charity.  Other activities included a Gift Stall at the Summer Fayre, coffee sessions on the third Sunday in each month and the laundering of the Church House tea towels.
